At Lily Lane, we believe that it is vital for all of our pupils to learn from and about religion, so that they can better understand the world around them. Through Religious Education, pupils develop their knowledge of the world’s faiths, and their understanding and awareness of the beliefs, values and traditions of other individual societies, communities and cultures. We encourage our pupils to ask questions about the world and to reflect on their beliefs, values and experiences. Religious Education enables pupils to build their sense of identity and belonging, which helps them flourish within their communities and as citizens in a diverse society. It teaches pupils to develop respect for others, including people with different faiths and beliefs, and helps to challenge prejudice. Religious Education prompts pupils to consider their responsibilities to themselves and to others and to explore how they might contribute to their communities and to the wider society. By exposing children to other beliefs, faiths and cultures we enable them to discover similarities and differences among peers and create an inclusive environment.
The Manchester Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education is used for Reception, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 based on a spiral curriculum where the children revisit each faith at a greater depth each year. Children are given the opportunity to build on prior knowledge to develop an understanding of the main world faiths and belief systems.
