Music
We study music in our school because it is a universally accessible medium which offers children an opportunity to express themselves, be creative and develop lifelong skills and experiences. Music touches hearts and minds, it celebrates and challenges, and it connects us and moves us. With Music, we can develop the ‘whole child’. Improve literacy, numeracy, confidence, self-esteem, self-awareness, perseverance, cultural knowledge, socialisation and sense of personal expression. At Lily Lane primary school we want to develop a lifelong, powerful enjoyment of music and music making. We want our children to develop musical skills and ability that will shape their lives and allow them to shine.
We intend for all children to experience music in a wide variety of contexts and to make progress in musical ability and skill. We want children to enjoy learning and performing music; individually, in small and large groups, in the school community, and in the wider community.
We want to be a singing school. We want children to feel confident and comfortable singing with others. Research has shown singing to have a profound effect upon physical, social, emotional and intellectual well-being and development, and we want our children to have access to this effect.
We hope to learn about and inspire discovery in each child’s personal musical culture and heritage, and in a wide range of known musical genres.
We aim to offer opportunities for all children to celebrate and share their performances, and to experience the performances of others. We want to give opportunities for all children to experience high quality live performances.
Our approach uses singing as the main focus of the children’s learning. All elements of music are taught holistically by experiencing them in songs, instrumental performances and musical movement. Composition, listening and musical literacy are also key areas of the children’s learning.
Our music curriculum aims to ensure that all pupils:
- perform, listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions, including the works of the great composers and musicians
- learn to sing and to use their voices, to create and compose music on their own and with others, have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument, use technology appropriately and have the opportunity to progress to the next level of musical excellence
- understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated, including through the interrelated dimensions: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure and appropriate musical notations
