Maths
Aims
At Lily Lane we teach Maths to develop our learners’ ability to reason and problem solve, as well as develop procedural fluency and conceptual understanding. We deliver the National Curriculum providing opportunities for learners to be part of creative and engaging lessons, through teaching both Math No Problem and the NCETM Mastering Number programme.
At Lily Lane, there is an acceptance that struggle is often a necessary step in learning. Learners are challenged through careful questioning and supported through use of concrete materials and visual representations to develop deep, conceptual understanding. Our teaching approach provides opportunities for our learners to develop resilience and to work collaboratively as problem solvers by teaching through the ‘I do, we do, you do’ approach. To achieve this, we provide a rich, balanced and progressive curriculum which caters the needs of all learners and entitles them to the same quality of teaching and learning opportunities.
In line with the National Curriculum Objectives for Mathematics, our intent is that all learners:
- become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that learners develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately
- reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language
- can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.
In Early Years we work towards the Early Learning Goals through a maths mastery approach in preparation for Year 1. Learning is play based in the continuous provision and sustained shared thinking indoors and outdoors. Teachers deliver a skill to the whole class which is developed by all practitioners throughout the continuous provision.
From Year 1 to Year 5, the Math curriculum is taught following the progression in the Maths No Problem scheme. The sequencing of our curriculum provides opportunities for children to develop conceptual understanding of new learning by encouraging learners to make connections and build on prior learning. Math No Problem is taught from Year 1 to Year 5 alongside the use of high quality MNP textbooks. The Math No Problem Primary Textbook Series is fully aligned with the national curriculum and is approved by the Department for Education.
